Discription of Santhi Yoga School.

An acquaintance recommended the school. I was looking for a type of exercise that would alleviate my back problems. I liked the idea of a more holistic approach that would combine and encourage physical and spiritual development.

The fact that the philosophy and practice of yoga is taught on an individual basis is makes this school different from all other places that I’ve found. Also the focus is always on your individual needs and set at a pace that feels right.  There is a sense of constant development – my positions/program may need to be adjusted, I might need to focus more on breathing techniques and meditation or I might have to do nothing but continue my daily practice. Either way, the teacher is there to guide you to the next level, when you’re ready.

 

The physical effects have been extremely important for me, because I had severe back pains. Since I started, my back pains have gradually decreased and for the first time in years I don’t need to take painkillers and other medication on a regular basis. Physically, I have found that yoga really gives a general sense of wellbeing and reduces and prevents stress related physical tension. The physical wellbeing is very much related to a sense of physical calmness, because I generally feel more physically relaxed.
For me the effects of meditation reflect or mirror the physical benefits on a mental level: it gives a sense of wellbeing, a relaxed state of calmness. It’s not that I’m now in constant state of serenity or peace, but meditation has helped me take a step back and observe the nature of my mind.


Taking out time everyday to observe the thoughts that come and go means that my mind, thoughts and feelings are less dominant. It feels like this creates more room within me, because I don’t become wrapped up in feelings. So if I’m angry or sad, it doesn’t overwhelm me in the same way. It helps me to create a distance, in a caring way, to all the things that go on in my life and with other people.

In terms of spiritual development, it has been extremely valuable for to have some form of guidance as to how to establish a daily practice. The group meditations have also been very inspiring for me, because meditating in a group is a quite different experience.
